Thompson LES Debuts in New York City

Thompson Hotels has opened its fourth property in New York City, Thompson LES (named for its location, Lower East Side). The hotel features the work of architect Ed Rawlins and interior designer Jim Walrod; Dodd Mitchell Designs, meanwhile, provided the guestroom concept.

Artwork greatly influences the design of the 141-room property. The third-floor outdoor pool and lounge's signature design detail is a filmstrip image of Andy Warhol photolithographed onto the tile of the pool floor. The image is the work of artist Gerard Malanga, Warhol's muse and confidante during the iconic Factory days. The second-floor restaurant features a giant color field painting by contemporary artist Peter Halley. In the guestrooms, black and white photographs from American artist Lee Friedlander are incorporated into illuminated headboards.

In addition to the one-of-a-kind headboards, the guestrooms offer a clean, industrial design that utilizes low beds and couches, simple black and metal tables, exposed columns and ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows with views of New York City. At Chinese restaurant Shang, helmed by chef Susur Lee, red chairs, gold accents, dim lighting, and wallpaper constructed from imprints of ancient Chinese drawings define the space. On the seventh floor, guests can enjoy sprawling lounge furniture and intimate table vignettes at the private terrace bar.
